Class of 2019 AUGUST Mentoring Guide - Alternate Pathways

Strengthening Your Mentoring Relationship, Program Engagement and Starting Your Pathway On-Time 

We believe that when pairs that stay together after high school, mentees have an even stronger chance of starting college on-time and persisting in year one.  This month, using the prompts below, you should reflect on and discuss how you can strengthen your mentoring relationship. 

August is a busy time for PSP. Take time to discuss your PSP Orientation and/or Advising Sessions. Remember to stay engaged with each other and with our programming to ensure that mentees have access to the support they need.  

Finally, remember to discuss the critical action steps mentees still need to take to start their pathway on time. Whether it’s the military, employment, a gap or service year program, or a certification program, we are here to support you. Let your Program Manager if/when you need support!   

Discussion Topic #1- Strengthening Your Mentoring Relationship 

If you were not able to use your July meeting to discuss your relationship, start by sharing your own candid reflections on your relationship this year.  

Share the following with your mentee and then ask them to share their thoughts using the same prompts. 

  • A time you inspired me….  

  • A topic I want to discuss more with you…  

  • An experience I would like us to share together this summer… 

 Use the prompts below to revisit and solidify plans for how you will stay in touch and when / where you will meet each month (in-person or virtually). 

  • The best way for us to stay in touch this summer is…. 

  • I am committed to meeting every month this summer and the best time/place would be… 

 Use this time to schedule your next in-person or virtual meetings (July and August).  

  • Enter the dates/times into a calendar or planner (consider using a shared google calendar and sending invites for those dates/times during your meeting). 

  • Remember to schedule reminders for these meetings and discuss how you will notify each other if you need to reschedule. 

  • Discuss and plan for a pair outing this summer.  

Discussion Topic #2- Staying Engaged with iMentor Programming 

Your iMentor Program Manager and other PSP staff are ready to support you this summer. Using the prompts below, discuss summer programming at iMentor and develop a plan to attend or follow-up on these sessions 

  1. Have you attended PSP Orientation? 
    • If yes, do you understand what is expected of you as a participant? Mentees: do you know what you have to do in order to receive stipends? Apply to the Emergency Fund? 
    • If no, when is the next session available? Have you signed up? 
  2. Have you attended an Alternate Pathways Orientation Session? 
    • If yes, are there other pathways you want to explore or apply to?  If so, which ones and how can your mentor and iMentor support you?  
    • If no, when is the next session available? Have you signed up? Take time now to sign up or contact your Program Manager for information on how to register.  
  3. Have you attended your summer advising session? 
    • If yes, do you understand all the steps you need to take to stay on track to start college on-time? Do you need help finding documents, offices, people or other support? 
    • If no, use this time to schedule your session. Check your email and phone for information about how to sign-up and reach out directly to your PM. 

Discussion Topic #3- Staying on Track to Start On-Time 

Step 1 

If you have attended your summer advising session, you should have a list of actions (and deadlines) you need to take to ensure that you are ready to start college on time. Refer to those next steps and discuss a plan for completing these steps as soon as possible. As a pair, identify any questions you have and reach out to your Program Manager for support.  

If you have not attended your summer advising session, use this time to reach out to your Program Manager (via text and email) to schedule your session.  

Step 2 

Next, refer to the checklists below of common steps to start alternate pathway programs. Together, identify what has been completed and discuss the steps that still need to be completed.  

 Gap/Service Year Programs 

  • Application Completed 

  • Interview 

  • Test(s) 

  • FAFSA (if applicable, example- Year Up) 

  • Orientation 

  • Screening requirements (substance, physical exam, etc.) 

  • Housing is secured 

  • Transportation is secured 

  • Child / Dependent Care is secured 

  • All necessary materials secured (appropriate clothing, etc.) 

Certificate/Certification Programs 

  • Application Completed 

  • Interview 

  • Test(s) 

  • FAFSA (if applicable, example- Year Up) 

  • WIOA Intake Meeting (for WIOA funded Certification Programs) 

  • Orientation 

  • Screening requirements (substance, physical exam, etc.) 

  • Housing is secured 

  • Transportation is secured 

  • Child / Dependent Care is secured 

  • All necessary materials secured (appropriate clothing, etc.) 

Military 

  • Have Required Documentation 

  • Complete application  

  • Complete interview  

  • Report to MEPS for ASVAB, Physical Fitness tests, & Career Counseling 

  • Complete swearing in ceremony (usually within day or two of MEPS visit) 

  • Receive leave date 

  • Secure Child / Dependent Care 

Employment 

Did student complete: 

  • Application 

  • Interview 

  • Test(s) 

  • Orientation 

  • Screening requirements (substance, physical exam, etc.) 

  • Possible Required Documentation 

  • State ID 

  • Social Security Number 

  • Birth Certificate 

  • High School Diploma 

  • Background Check 

  • Letter(s) of Recommendation / References

  • Have your college plans changed for this summer? 

  • Are you planning to work this summer? 

  • Do you know all of the steps you need to complete to stay on track to start college in the fall? 

  • Have you set up your student account at your school and are you checking it each week? 

  • What type of support do you need from your iMentor Program Manager? 

  • What type of support do you (mentee) need from your mentor? 

  • What are the three most important tasks you need to complete right away?
