Reflecting on the Year and Maximizing Summer Experiences

This month, you will take time to celebrate and reflect  on the relationship you’ve developed over the past year. Additionally, mentees will reflect on their first year of college and plan for a successful summer internship or other career development experience. Should any questions arise, or you need additional support, reach out your program manager.

Discussion Topic #1 - Reflecting on Your Mentoring Relationship

We are excited for you to celebrate and reflect on the relationship you’ve developed this year. This is a great opportunity for you to discuss together how you have been successful so far, and how you can continue to grow as a mentoring pair.

Mentors: Start by sharing your own candid reflections on your relationship this year. Share the following with your mentee:

  • A time you inspired me….
  • A time you gave me great advice…
  • A time where I learned from an experience or story you shared…
  • A topic I want to discuss more with you…
  • An experience I would like us to share together…

Mentees: Share your own thoughts using the same prompts:

  • A time you inspired me….
  • A time you gave me great advice…
  • A time where I learned from an experience or story you shared…
  • A topic I want to discuss more with you…
  • An experience I would like us to share together…

Mentors: To close the conversation, share any insights you gathered from what your mentee shared and ask how you can best support them as you continue into this next year.

Discussion Topic #2 Maximizing Your Internship/Summer Experience

For this conversation, pick up from your previous discussion about a summer internship or other meaningful career development experience. Should any questions arise, or you need additional support regarding summer internships for your mentee, remember to reach out to your program manager.

Mentors: take the lead by checking in on your mentees progress and plans.  You might ask:

  • Have you identified a summer internship or other opportunity to explore and develop your career interests and skills? If not, what are your next steps?
  • Do you believe you were successful in building the skills you need to be successful this summer?
  • What will you do to build those skills this summer?
  • Are there actions you still need to take for your internship? If so, how can I support you and be an accountability partner?
  • How will you use your relationship with your internship manager/supervisor to learn, grow and establish your legacy at the end of the summer?
  • What are some ways that you can build upon your legacy during your summer internship?

Mentors: To close the conversation, share any insights you gathered from what your mentee shared and ask how you can best support them leading up to and during the summer.

Discussion Topic #3 Reflecting on the year

For your final conversation this month,  focus on your mentees’ reflections on their first year after high school. Additionally, mentors, you will share your reflections on the support you’ve been able to provide in the past year.

Mentees: Start by sharing your own reflections using the prompts below.

  • What are you most proud of from your first year out of high school?
  • What is one thing you wish you would have done this year?
  • What is one lesson you learned that you will apply this summer?
  • How will you apply lessons from this year for the fall?

Mentors: Share any insights you gathered from what your mentee shared and ask how you can serve as an accountability partner in the future. Next, share your own reflections.

  • What are you most proud of in your role as a mentor this year?
  • How were you able to be a strong support for your mentee this year?
  • What is one thing you did this year that you believe had the most impact on supporting your mentee?
  • What are 1-2 actions you would like to take to better support your mentee in the future?

To close the conversation, give your mentee a chance to share any thoughts based on what you shared. Share your own insights on your discussions this month and remember to celebrate this past year as a mentoring pair.  Looking forward to this next year, highlight how you can work together to grow your relationship, and how you can support your mentee leading up to and during the summer.
