New Year's check-in (when your mentee is taking a gap year)

If your mentee is taking a gap year, they may not be on a semester rhythm. That's why New Year's is a perfect time to check in and reflect.  Here are some ideas for questions or conversations starters you can use this month to open important and timely topics with your mentee.

  • How are you feeling about returning to your program for the next few months?

  • How has it been to spend time with friends and family over the break?

  • What are your favorite memories from the first months of your gap year?

  • What are some things you have learned since graduating from high school? How do you think you have changed or grown since graduating from high school?

  • Do you have any goals/resolutions for the new year?

  • Are you nervous about anything for the new year?

  • Did you defer college admission before beginning your gap year program?  If so, what is your plan for reconnecting with the school(s) you deferred?
