Mentor Application FAQ

Below are some questions frequently raised by mentors about the application.

What if I forget my password?

  • Click on the “trouble signing in” link on the login page. You will be sent a message to your personal email address letting you know how to reset your password. If you are having trouble, email [email protected].

What does the application include?

  • The application consists of 4 sections: Personal, Evaluation, Matching and Reference. The questions on the application help us make a really strong match from the start. You won’t have to fill out the application again.

How long will the application take?

  •  The application can generally be completed in 15-30 minutes.

The application isn’t loading properly.

  • The best way to access the application is on a computer, instead of a mobile device. Specifically, a modern web browser with one of the following makes and models is needed:
    • Chrome version 42 or higher
    • Firefox version 37 or higher
    • Safari version 7 or higher
  • You may also want to use a personal computer, as certain businesses have security settings that can inhibit access to the application. Some features require that JavaScript be enabled and pop-ups unblocked on the web browser.

It won’t allow me to move on to the next question.

  • Double check that every required question has been answered. Required questions are marked as such when clicked into and out of. If you try to move on to the next question, you are taken to the topmost unanswered required question.

Why do you ask for references?

  • As an organization that works with young people, we try to collect all relevant information from applicants before they become mentors. We find it really useful to collect information from the people that know them best - their friends, coworkers, employers, roommates, teachers, etc

Who should I list as a reference?

  • You can choose from a variety of people including friends, colleagues, employers, teachers, professors, etc. Your references should have known you for at least six months. We ask that you list three total references. We respectfully request that you avoid using family members as references. If you must list a family member, do not list more than one family member as a reference.

How many references do you need?

  • We ask for three references and we accept responses from the first two that respond.

What if I don't know who I want to use as a reference?

  • You can return to the application at any time to finish the References section. We will need your references completed before we can approve you to be a mentor in our program.

When will you contact my references?

  • We will contact your references once you officially complete and submit your application. We ask that they respond within 48 hours of receiving the request.

How will you contact my references?

  • Your references will receive an email from iMentor including a link to an online reference survey that is completed securely online with a timestamp and an electronic signature. We will only call your references by phone if we are having trouble reaching them via e-mail. If your reference tells you that they did not receive an e-mail from iMentor, ask them to check their spam folder.

What types of questions do you ask my references?

  • To protect the integrity and security of our mentor screening process, we do not disclose to mentor applicants the actual questions that are included in the reference survey e-mail. All references receive the same survey, it is not customized based on your individual application details.

Can you just give me the survey link for me to send to my references myself?

  • In order to protect the integrity of our screening process, the survey link is sent directly from our platform to the e-mail address listed for the reference. This allows us to verify identity, date and time of completion and obtain an electronic signature.

What if I need to change one of my references after I have submitted my application?

  • You can reach out to your screening coordinator (assigned after mentor orientation) and they will be able to add, change, edit or replace information for any of your original references.
